Go Mighty’s 31 Days of Inspiring Women, #6: Yasha Wallin
Meet Yasha, Berlin-based arts + culture writer and Creativity Curator at GOOD Magazine, AND Editor at surf magazine The Usual. She’s a work-traveler of the world, splitting her time between Berlin, New York and LA. She’s tasking herself with growing the GOOD community into a huge, dynamic, collaborative network that truly brings more creative and social good into the world. We think she’s totally got this.

So, Yasha, what’s your story?
I’m a Bay Area, California native who just moved to Berlin after a decade (gulp!) in New York City. In NYC I worked in the art world, running galleries and writing about art, design and fashion and last year took a position as GOOD Magazine’s Creativity Curator—my dream job. I also make a surf/lifestyle newsprint publication with my best friend called The Usual.
How did you get where you are today? Where do you want to go from here?
I got to where I am today by taking a genuine interest in people, my surroundings, and by being insatiably curious. Having amazing support from family, friends, mentors who believe in me, even when I don’t, helped a lot too. Travel has always been really important in my life and has kept me humble, engaged in the world and has provided plenty of experiences to write about and learn from. What has also been key is narrowing down my many passions so I can focus on a couple of important ones like writing/editing interesting stories, collaborating with creatives, doing (my small part) of good for the world.
Tell us a bit more about these ten goals from your life list. What’s the inspiration behind the goals you chose?
Some are short-term goals, some are long-term. While I have career and personal aspirations on the list, a lot of it revolves around me trying to give back in some way, but not just talk about giving back, actually doing something about it and be of service to others. What’s really important for me with my position at GOOD, and having just moved to Berlin, is to grow both an online and physical community of likeminded individuals. On GOOD, having launched our community platform about six months ago, things are starting to get really exciting and I’m seeing great connections being made and hopefully this will build exponentially.
Any advice for others on how to stay motivated/focused on achieving their goals?
Make lists—As simple as it sounds I forget a lot of what I want to do in the day, and need to prioritize things otherwise I’ll spend too much time on busy work. Talk to friends, colleagues, etc. about your ideas—The more other people know what you’re working on, the more they can add to the conversation, or help along the way. It took me a while, but when I finally learned to be vulnerable and ask for help, the easier my job, life, etc. got. Go running or do something outdoors—Sometimes I loose motivation because I get lost in my head; as soon as I do something physical I’m able to focus again.
